A line of 300 people waited anxiously for the doors to open ay 9 a.m. for the annual Mothers Day Orchid Sale Saturday at Makaeo Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park.
“It’s just amazing. We weren’t expecting this,” said Whitney Steele from the event’s sponsor, the Kona Orchid Society.
Five orchid vendors joined five other plant vendors plus 18 craft and food booths for the event.
Also on display were prized orchids, not for sale, which were being judged for best in show.
The crowd rushed to get first pick at the many types of orchids for sale and in less than one hour after doors opened, almost all of the flowering plants were sold out.
“We are building a community built around orchids,” said Steele.
She said the club is recruiting new members, as well as welcoming back old members.
The Kona Orchid Society usually meets the first Friday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Makua Lani Academy Bridge House.
